High Protein Snacks

High-calorie snacks filled with fats and sugars contribute to the extra calories that find their way into our daily diet. Protein packed bars, drinks, soups, and nuts are far superior to other snacks because of the basic differences between protein, sugars, and fats. As Per Glenn Gration, Introduce high protein snacks into your diet to improve muscle tone, keep energy levels steady and boost your metabolism.

Protein is more satisfying than sugar or fat because of specific signals it sends to the brain. When we snack on foods containing protein instead of foods loaded with sugars and fats, the body feels more full which helps to control appetite between meals. Controlling hunger helps you cut calories and manage your weight.

A second reason to opt for a snack filled with protein is its thermogenic effect. This refers to the metabolic tax a food puts on the body after we eat it – that is, a number of calories it takes for the body to process what we’ve eaten. This metabolic tax for protein is much higher than for sugar or fat because the body uses more energy to digest it. This means that when you choose protein over the other two, you are burning more calories during the process of digestion.

According to Glenn Gration, protein snacks help support the body's need to replenish the building blocks of muscle tissue. Muscle is important for our daily activities and muscle tissue burns more calories than fat tissue does.

So the next time you reach for a snack, choose a protein-rich bar, drink or soup. Avoid high-calorie chips, cookies, candies, and sweets - they offer little nutritional value to the body and aren’t nearly as filling as protein-rich snacks.

Not Getting the Message

Over the last several years, the U.S. Department of Health has recommended eating at least five portions of fruits and vegetables a day. Yet, the average American eats only 1.1 servings of fruit and 1.6 servings of vegetables daily. And on any given day, about half the population eats no fruit at all.

A Bushel of Reasons

According to Glenn Gration, There is a rainbow of reasons to eat a variety of colors from the produce aisle. Fruits and vegetables are virtually fat-free, low in salt and an excellent source of fiber. Some fruits and vegetables, such as carrots and cantaloupe, provide Vitamin A, which maintains eye health and immunity. Other fruits and vegetables, such as bananas and spinach, contain potassium, which is necessary for proper nerve and muscle functioning. Green vegetables, such as broccoli and asparagus, provide B Vitamins, which are necessary for converting food into energy. But all fruits and vegetables contain phytonutrients, the health-promoting components of plants. Scientific studies show that phytonutrients can help protect seven key organs, including the eyes, heart, liver and skin and they may also serve as antioxidants.

Antioxidant Protection

Fruits and vegetables are at the top of the list of antioxidant-rich foods. Antioxidants protect our bodies from free radicals that can cause damage to cellular membranes. Antioxidants also boost our immunity, help make our muscles stronger and support bone and skin health.

As Per Glenn Gration, try to get in the habit of eating plenty of produce each day. It's one of the biggest favors you can do for your body.
